Qiu Zhijie

Working with Art AsiaPacific has definitedly been nothing but beneficial for my future. Being introduced to famous artists and gallery curator as a member of the AAP brough me exposures that I never imagined at this age. My opportunites to meet famous artists and potential employer had increased drastically. Just today, after artist Qiu Zhijie's lecture at NYU, I was introduced by Hiroshi to Christopher Mao, the director of Chambers Fine Arts Gallery. The presentation itself, overall, was informative and rather interesting. Althought at some seemed repetively and provincial, Qiu's works retain important values of the Chinese culture and histories that are worth checking out. A calligrapher by training, his art revolves around the concept of bodily control with a focus on Chinese calligraphy. His "re-performed" light calligraphy and theatre performace in the very common room were beautifully executed.
I like Chinese contemporary art. Especially works of older generation artists like Qiu, Zhang Huan, and Chen Zhen. And even some works by younger generation like pop video artist Cao Fei. But, personality wise, I have resent the native Mainlanders. Mainly because they get on my nerve. I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I just don't like them and their logic. Being a potential future Chinese-American artist, I hope I won't be categorized as one of them.
