Artists of the week

Chinese video artists:

Song Dong

This veteran video artist works in the theme of the surreal versus reality. Her videos often concentrates on illustrating the boundary and the constant back and forth interplay between illusion and substance. Her Cool Boiled Water (1997) presents this very irony by providing the viewers with an opportunity to experience another dimension to the trivial activity of boiling water. Her 1996 Stamping the Water performance is another favorite of this art student. Her cunningness and humor proves she is not only a master of conceptual video art, but also one of the many Chinese succesors of Signore Piero Manzoni.

edit:// I just found out that Song Dong has an exhibition on view in New York City at the Chamber Fine Art Gallery. The show is call The Way of Chopsticks. Go check it out if you get a chance. It's on view until July 28.

Xu Zhen
His video artworks are very intriguing. His video entitled From the Body Interior- Two People Sniffing Each Other is unique in that by repeating the act of smelling and stripping, the artificial projection is capable of making its viewers become sensitive and conscientious of their own and other's boby odors after viewing the first few minutes of the video.

This exhibition at Berlin looks really intense and fun. Too bad it's oversea.
